Biography
Robert Bushnell Ryan was born in Chicago in 1909 and worked as an actor across film, television, and stage, as well as a military officer. He appeared in films noir and Westerns, taking roles as anti-heroes and villains. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Crossfire (1947) and a BAFTA Award nomination for Billy Budd (1962). On stage, he won a Drama Desk Award for a 1971 revival of Long Day's Journey into Night. He died in 1973.
