Ronald Wayne Van Zant was born in Jacksonville, Florida on January 15, 1948, and died on October 20, 1977. He was a rock singer and songwriter who served as the founding lead vocalist and primary lyricist of Lynyrd Skynyrd. His brothers included Johnny Van Zant, who later became the lead vocalist of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Donnie Van Zant, who founded and sang in the rock band .38 Special.
