Sarah Vaughan was born in Newark, New Jersey on March 27, 1924, and died on April 3, 1990. A jazz singer and pianist, she received the nicknames "Sassy," "The Divine One," and the "Queen of Bebop." She won two Grammy Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, and was nominated for nine Grammy Awards in total. In 1989 she received an NEA Jazz Masters Award.
