Biography

Sarah Yorke Jackson was born in Philadelphia in 1803. She became White House hostess and acting first lady from November 1834 to March 1837 as the daughter-in-law of President Andrew Jackson, having married his adopted son. Initially designated to manage the Hermitage, Jackson's Tennessee residence, she moved to the White House and served as co-hostess with Emily Donelson after a fire damaged the Hermitage. When Donelson became ill, Jackson assumed full responsibility as White House hostess for the remainder of the presidency. She returned to the restored Hermitage after leaving the White House and lived there until her death in 1887.
