Seymour Martin Lipset was born in 1922 in New York and died in 2006. A sociologist and political scientist, he conducted research in political sociology, trade union organization, social stratification, public opinion, and the sociology of intellectual life, and wrote about conditions for democracy in comparative perspective. He served as president of the American Political Science Association from 1979 to 1980 and president of the American Sociological Association from 1992 to 1993. He identified as a socialist early in his life before moving to the right and being considered among the first neoconservatives.
