Sherman Hemsley was an actor and comedian born in South Philadelphia in 1938. He portrayed George Jefferson on the CBS series All in the Family and The Jeffersons from 1975 to 1985, and played Deacon Ernest Frye on the NBC series Amen from 1986 to 1991. His work on The Jeffersons earned him nominations for a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy Award, and he won an NAACP Image Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Comedy Series or Special in 1982. He died on July 24, 2012.
