Stanley Schachter was a psychologist born in Queens, New York in 1922 and died in 1997. In 1962, he developed the two factor theory of emotion with Jerome E. Singer, proposing that emotions arise from physiological arousal combined with a cognitive label the person assigns to that arousal. His published work extended to obesity, group dynamics, birth order, and smoking. A 2002 survey ranked him as the seventh most cited psychologist of the twentieth century.
