Stephen Fuller Austin was born in Wythe County, Virginia, in 1793 and died in 1836. An empresario granted the right to settle land in the Tejas region of Mexico, he brought 300 families and their slaves from the United States in 1825 to colonize the eastern areas. He arranged settlements through contracts with the Mexican government, established colonies, and created early systems of local government that enabled communities to grow and endure.
