From 1998 to 2005, she was at the center of a series of court and legislative actions concerning her care after entering an irreversible permanent vegetative state. Her husband and legal guardian sought to remove her feeding tube in 1998, arguing she would not have wanted prolonged artificial life support without prospect of recovery, while her parents contested both his assertions and her medical diagnosis, advocating for continued artificial nutrition and hydration. The legal challenges brought by her parents, involving state and federal politicians including George W. Bush, delayed the removal of her feeding tube for seven years before it was ultimately removed. She died on March 31, 2005.
