Thomas Patten Stafford was born on September 17, 1930, in Weatherford, Oklahoma. An Air Force officer and test pilot, he became a NASA astronaut and flew to the Moon as one of 24 Apollo astronauts. He served as Chief of the Astronaut Office between 1969 and 1971. He died on March 18, 2024.
