He worked as a theatre, radio, and film actor, taking on mostly character roles throughout his film career, though he played leading men in several films during the 1940s. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Johnny Eager (1942) and starred in the westerns Shane (1953), 3:10 to Yuma (1957), and Gunman's Walk (1958). His final film role included a mentally disturbed airline passenger in Airport (1970).
