Biography

Varian Fry was born in New York City in 1907 and worked as a journalist and civil rights advocate. From August 1940 to September 1941, he operated a rescue network in Vichy France that aided approximately 2,000 refugees fleeing Nazi persecution, including anti-Nazi figures, Jewish people, and artists and intellectuals. He died in 1967.
