Vincent du Vigneaud was an American biochemist born in Chicago in 1901. He received the 1955 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on biochemically important sulphur compounds, particularly for the first synthesis of a polypeptide hormone, namely oxytocin. He died in 1978.
