An American tennis player active in the early decades of the 20th century, he was known as a superlative volleyer. A. Wallis Myers ranked him World No. 2 as an amateur in 1924, and Ray Bowers ranked him joint World No. 1 pro in 1927 and World No. 1 pro in 1930.
