W. S. Merwin was born in New York City in 1927 and died in 2019. He was a poet, translator, and writer who produced more than fifty books of poetry and prose, along with many translated works. During the 1960s anti-war movement, his poetry employed indirect, unpunctuated narration. From the 1980s onward, his writing reflected an interest in Buddhist philosophy and deep ecology, and he spent his later years in rural Maui, Hawaii, where he worked to restore the island's rainforests.
