Walter M. Miller was born in New Smyrna Beach, Florida on January 23, 1923, and died on January 9, 1996. He wrote science fiction stories that he assembled into the novel A Canticle for Leibowitz, published in 1959. The novel won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1961 and was his only novel published during his lifetime.
