Walter Rauschenbusch was born in Rochester, New York in 1861 and died in 1918. A theologian and Baptist pastor, he taught at the Rochester Theological Seminary and participated in the Social Gospel and single tax movements that emerged in the United States during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He was the maternal grandfather of philosopher Richard Rorty and the great-grandfather of Paul Raushenbush.
