Wendell Hampton Ford was born in Owensboro, Kentucky in 1924 and died in 2015. A Democrat, he served as Kentucky's 53rd governor from 1971 to 1974 and then in the United States Senate from 1974 to 1999, becoming the first person in Kentucky history to be successively elected lieutenant governor, governor, and United States senator. He held the position of Senate Democratic whip from 1991 to 1999 and was the longest-serving senator from Kentucky at the time of his retirement, a record later surpassed by Mitch McConnell in 2009.
