Biography
William Carlos Williams was born in Rutherford, New Jersey in 1883 and worked as both a physician and a poet. He wrote Spring and All in 1923, following T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land, and composed the five-volume poem Paterson between 1946 and 1958, using Paterson, New Jersey as material for the work. His poems "This Is Just to Say" and "The Red Wheelbarrow" focused on everyday subjects, while others engaged with visual art; his poem "The Great Figure" inspired Charles Demuth's painting I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold. Williams died in 1963 and was awarded a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for Pictures from Brueghel and Other Poems.
