American novelist (1922–1998)
Biography
William Gaddis was born in New York City on December 29, 1922, and died on December 16, 1998. He wrote five novels, the first and longest of which, The Recognitions, appeared on TIME magazine's list of 100 best novels published between 1923 and 2005. Two of his novels, J R and A Frolic of His Own, each won the National Book Award for Fiction. His essay collection The Rush for Second Place was published after his death in 2002, and his letters were published by Dalkey Archive Press in 2013.
