William Howard Stein was born in New York City on June 25, 1911, and died on February 2, 1980. A biochemist and chemist, he worked on determining the ribonuclease sequence and the relationship between its structure and catalytic activity, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1972. He also took part in developing the automatic amino acid analyzer, which advanced chromatography and enabled modern chromatographic methods including liquid and gas chromatography.
