History & Significance

One of many Scottish raids into Cumberland during the mid-fourteenth century, occurring just before the catastrophic defeat at Neville's Cross. These raids were part of the sustained Scottish pressure on northern England that continued despite England's military superiority at major pitched battles. The border communities of Cumberland lived in near-constant fear of such incursions throughout the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
