History & Significance

When Dafydd ap Gruffudd launched the Second Welsh War on Palm Sunday 1282, he swept through the north-east taking multiple castles. Beyond Hawarden he attacked Flint, Rhuddlan and Denbigh and overran much of Powys Fadog. His success in the opening weeks of the war was extraordinary given the limited resources available. However his failure to coordinate with his brother Llywelyn proved fatal, and the war ultimately ended in the destruction of Welsh independence.
