History & Significance

Abergeldie Castle on Deeside, close to Balmoral, was one of several minor strongholds in Aberdeenshire and the eastern Highlands that changed hands or were contested in 1689. The Gordons and other Jacobite-leaning families of the northeast maintained intermittent local control against government sympathisers. These minor actions illustrate the patchwork nature of Jacobite control in the northeast Highlands during 1689.
