History & Significance

Richard de Clare (father of Strongbow), acting under Henry I grant, conquered Ceredigion from the Welsh and established Norman control over much of the Teifi valley. De Clare built castles at Aberystwyth and Cardigan and began the settlement of Norman and Flemish colonists. Welsh resistance was fierce; several ambushes and skirmishes occurred as de Clare pushed westward through the forested river valleys.
