The Battle

History & Significance

Henry Tudor's march from his landing at Mill Bay on 7 August 1485 through Wales to Shrewsbury was as militarily significant as the Battle of Bosworth itself. Rhys ap Thomas brought several thousand Welsh soldiers and symbolically fulfilled his oath not to let Henry pass over his body by supposedly lying under a bridge. Walter Herbert and other potential Richard III loyalists failed to block the march. Henry entered England with a substantial army. The Welsh greeted him as the fulfillment of the prophecy of the Red Dragon.

Forces Involved

Henry Tudor: 2,000 French and Welsh on landing, growing to c.5,000 by Shrewsbury
