History & Significance

The Earl of March assembled his forces at Wigmore Castle, ancestral Mortimer seat in Herefordshire, before advancing to meet the Lancastrian force under Jasper Tudor and Wiltshire at Mortimer's Cross on 2 February 1461. The parhelion or sun-dogs phenomenon seen before the battle gave rise to the House of York's sunburst badge.
