The death of Henry I in 1135 triggered a major Welsh uprising as rulers who had been cowed by his military expeditions sensed the opportunity offered by the English succession crisis. Gruffudd ap Rhys of Deheubarth led an uprising in south Wales that inflicted a crushing defeat on a Norman force under Richard fitz Gilbert at Lluchryd near Cardigan. The battle killed one of the most important Marcher lords and opened south Wales to Welsh reconquest, reversing decades of Norman expansion.
