The 1315 raids extended the Scottish strategy of devastation into Cumberland. While Edward Bruce besieged Carlisle (which held under its determined governor Andrew de Harclay), Moray and Douglas swept the county around it. The combination of siege and devastation was designed to demonstrate total Scottish superiority. Cumberland began paying tribute to avoid burning. The raids were economically crippling for an area still recovering from the great famines of 1315-1322.
