Banff Castle was one of the English-held strongholds on the Moray Firth coast. Its capture as part of Bruces 1308 northern campaign completed Scottish control of the north-east coastline from Inverness to Aberdeen. The castle was demolished in keeping with Bruces standard policy. The systematic clearance of the Moray Firth coast cut off English seaborne supply to northern garrisons.
