History & Significance

Henry Bolingbroke landed at Ravenspur in Yorkshire while Richard II was in Ireland. Richard's army dissolved. Trapped at Flint Castle, Richard agreed to abdicate — "God save King Henry." He was imprisoned at Pontefract and starved or suffocated to death early in 1400. The Lancastrian usurpation set in motion sixty years of dynastic instability that climaxed in the Wars of the Roses.
