History & Significance

London opened its gates to the rebel barons in May 1215, a decisive political and military act that transformed the First Barons War. Citizens sympathetic to the rebel cause allowed the baronial army to enter unopposed. This gave the barons a secure base, enormous prestige, control of royal revenues, and leverage that compelled Magna Carta. London had been similarly pivotal in Stephen's crisis.
