At the Battle of Mortimer's Cross (2 February 1461), Edward of March destroyed the Lancastrian Welsh force. Owen Tudor — father of Jasper Tudor and grandfather of the future Henry VII, husband of Catherine of Valois (Henry V's widow) — was captured and executed at Hereford. He reportedly could not believe he would be beheaded until the collar of his red velvet doublet was ripped away. Jasper Tudor escaped to continue the fight. Owen's grandson would become Henry VII fifteen years later.
