History & Significance

Dunkeld — the gateway between Highland and Lowland Scotland, scene of the 1689 Cameronian defence — was controlled by Jacobite forces for much of the 1715 rising. The strategic pass gave the Jacobites the ability to move troops between Mar's Perthshire base and the Highlands. Small skirmishes occurred as the Jacobites enforced their control of the crossing.
