The Battle

History & Significance

Following the death of Somerled at Renfrew in 1164, Godred II of Man moved to recover the Hebridean islands Somerled had seized from him. His campaigns in the northern Hebrides temporarily re-established Manx sovereignty over Lewis and Skye and demonstrated that the Kingdom of Man remained a significant naval power even after its defeat by Somerled.
