The Battle

History & Significance

England's first major naval victory of the medieval period. The Earl of Salisbury found the French invasion fleet anchored at Damme with crews ashore foraging. The English destroyed or captured hundreds of ships and vast stores. Philip Augustus burned what remained rather than let it fall. The victory delayed French invasion plans and bought England time — ultimately the victory that prevented an earlier Louis of France invasion.

Casualties & Losses
