History & Significance

The MacLeods of Dunvegan and the MacDonalds of Sleat contested the waters around Skye repeatedly. Naval encounters using the traditional birlinns and galleys of the Hebrides decided territorial control along the coast. This engagement off the east coast of Skye temporarily secured MacLeod access to the fertile lands of Trotternish.
