History & Significance

The Earl of Mar's muster of clans and Perthshire gentry in September 1715 extended throughout Highland Perthshire. At Moulin above Pitlochry, Perthshire clan contingents assembled and were reviewed before marching south to join the main Jacobite army at Perth. The Atholl country contributed large numbers — though the Duke of Atholl himself remained neutral, many of his tenants and lesser Murrays joined the rising. Government agents in Perth and Edinburgh received alarming reports of the scale of this assembly in the Highland passes of Perthshire.
