The Battle

History & Significance

Rhys and Gwilym ap Tudur, cousins of Owain Glyndwr, seize Conway Castle by a ruse on Good Friday 1401 when the garrison is at church. They hold the great Edwardian fortress briefly before being bought off. The seizure of one of Edward I finest castles with minimal force is a major propaganda coup for the revolt and shows English garrison complacency.
