The Battle

History & Significance

Fought forty years after Hastings — on the same approximate anniversary — Tinchebray united England and Normandy under Henry I. Robert Curthose spent the remaining 28 years of his life in captivity. The battle was notable for dismounted knights fighting on foot, prefiguring later English tactical doctrine. It ended the succession crisis that had split the Conqueror's inheritance.
