The Battle

History & Significance

Reginald son of Somerled who had divided the Hebrides with his brother Angus clashed with Manx naval forces in 1210 as the Kingdom of Man sought to reassert authority over the southern Hebrides. Reginald had by this time established Islay as the undisputed heart of his lordship and repelled Manx interference, demonstrating the durability of the Somerled settlement despite Norwegian pressure.
