History & Significance

On the accession of George I, Birmingham mobs attacked Dissenter meeting houses crying for the High Church and Sacheverell. The riots were part of a national wave of Tory and High Church violence against Dissenters and supporters of the Whig succession in the first year of the Hanoverian dynasty.
