The Battle

History & Significance

During the First Barons' War, Llywelyn the Great exploited the civil war between John and the barons to launch aggressive raids into the southern Marches. He captured Carmarthen, Kidwelly, Cardigan, Cilgerran and threatened Chepstow (Striguil). In 1216 he convened the Council of Aberdyfi — a gathering of all Welsh princes that acknowledged his overlordship. He was de facto king of all Wales without using the title.
