History & Significance

After the rout of the Yorkist army at Wakefield Lord Clifford pursued the fugitives. The young Edmund Earl of Rutland, York's second son aged approximately seventeen, was killed near Wakefield Bridge in the pursuit, reportedly by Clifford personally. This atrocity inflamed Yorkist resolve.
