The Battle

History & Significance

The Enniskillen Protestant militia, defending their own county, caught and routed a Jacobite army. Mountcashel was captured. The victory at Newtownbutler, on the same day as the relief of Derry, effectively secured Ulster for William III. It proved the Enniskilleners were a formidable fighting force that became the nucleus of the Williamite Irish army.
