History & Significance

On Michaelmas 1294, Madog ap Llywelyn led a near-national revolt against Edward I's heavy taxation and the abuses of his officials. North Wales rose entirely — English administrators fled or were killed. Edward I himself was nearly cut off at Conwy when supply lines were broken. The revolt was eventually crushed at Maes Moydog in 1295, but it demonstrated that Welsh resentment of English rule remained explosive. Edward responded by building Beaumaris Castle — his final masterpiece of military architecture.
