The Battle

History & Significance

John systematically seized the estates of bishops and abbots who left England following the papal interdict. The Bishop of Lincoln's vast estates and those of the Bishop of Coventry were taken into royal custody. Armed retainers were used to occupy episcopal manors. The revenues funded John's military campaigns. This widespread spoliation of the church alienated clergy and laity alike and built the grievances that fed the First Barons War.
