The Battle

History & Significance

Olaf the Black brother of Reginald King of Man fought a prolonged struggle for control of the Kingdom of the Isles in the 1220s. The conflict between the brothers divided the loyalty of the Hebridean chiefs and weakened Norwegian authority over the western isles, creating the power vacuum that Somerled successors exploited. Olaf eventually prevailed and reunited the kingdom before his death in 1237.
