After the formal forfeiture of the Lordship of the Isles in 1493, dispossessed MacDonald branches continued raiding into territories they regarded as their own. The MacKenzies, who were filling the power vacuum left by the MacDonald collapse, fought off these raids and consolidated their hold on Wester Ross. These encounters marked the transition from MacDonald to MacKenzie dominance in the northwest.
