History & Significance

The main battle of the 1715 rising. Both sides' right wings swept the enemy from the field — leaving both armies with one wing each. Mar failed to exploit the confusion and retreated. The famous Jacobite toast was "We won, we won, and we ran away!" The indecision allowed the government to consolidate, dooming the rising.
